Update: 1st Week Home

Roxy’s 1st Super Bowl
So we’ve been home one week and are still in the process of settling in. It took a few days to unpack and do the mounds of laundry that needed to be done. Roxy seems to be pretty happy in her new home. We’ve started trying to integrate American foods into her diet and she now likes goldfish crackers and puffs. She rejected them while we were in China. Also, we have been trying to get her into drinking whole milk. In China, they were giving her these sugary milk drinks that came in flavors like mango and strawberry and they were really sweet. We have been adding strawberry syrup to her whole milk (I know, I know) but gradually adding less so we can wean her off drinking sweet stuff and just have her drinking milk, water, and a little juice.
Kenny went back to work so during the weekdays it’s just me and her. Basically, we wake up usually close to noon and then I give her a bath and make lunch. Then we hang out and play with her toys most of the day. Because she’s been sleeping so late (I think we’re still a bit jet lagged) she hasn’t been taking a nap. Kenny gets home and we have dinner. Some of our friends have been nice enough to bring over home cooked meals so we love those nights since we really haven’t done much cooking yet. In fact the only thing I have made is gai jook (chicken congee) because it’s comforting and familiar to all of us, including Roxy. We try to put Roxy to bed earlier but the earliest she will go to bed is 10pm. After some tears, Roxy usually cries herself out and conks out. Then the next day we do it all over again. But we have to sit with her until she falls asleep or she will hop off the bed and go in the living room and cry.
We’re happy that Roxy seems to like all of the toys that we got for her and all the gifts that people have gotten her. I’ve noticed that she is also very musical. In the last post, you all saw the way she danced to the music on her first night home. So we plan to get her more musical toys and see where this goes. Roxy also loves to play with our iPhones or iPads and can already unlock them and go to the games she likes. I’ve downloaded some toddler friendly apps for her and hope to learn some more from other parents.
I’ve been pretty careful about letting people come over simply because I don’t want to overwhelm Roxy. Although Roxy is a little shy around strangers at first, she usually warms up if you give her a little time. We’ve been really proud of her because we think that she’s doing really really well considering she just got adopted, got new parents, moved from China to the United States, became an American citizen, got a new home, and has to deal with meeting new people and eating new foods.
Roxy finally met her godparents Alexis and Aaron (Alexis is my godsister and we asked them to be Roxy’s godparents) when we went over to watch the Super Bowl with them. Although the Super Bowl was probably the worst I’ve ever watched, the company and the food were good and so we had a great time.
This week we will pretty much be taking it easy. I am still trying to figure out the quickest way to get Roxy a U.S. issued birth certificate. Please pray that Roxy’s adjustment continues to go smoothly.

It’s wonderful to know all the prayers have been answered.
Children don’t come with instructions, you just do your best
and pray that they will receive all the positive things you try
to reach and instill in them. You will be fine.
