I am one tired but happy woman! Hong Kong is pretty fast-paced. Since I live in suburbia, it’s always a slight adjustment for me when I come here. I always think about how if my parents had chosen to, I could have easily been raised elsewhere with Hong Kong, Los Angeles, and Toronto being the likely cities. Hong Kong is a part of me and who I am. Although I was raised in the U.S., both my Mom’s and Dad’s sides of the family come from Hong Kong. We’re 100% Cantonese and although my ancestors came from the Guangzhou area of China, whenever I think of my “motherland” I think of Hong Kong. Every day has been extremely packed.
In the nutshell, since Christmas, I’ve gone to our family reunion at the Chariot Club, hung out with my cousin, ate with my cousins and some friends at Cafe Too buffet at the Island Shangri-La, hung out with my family, visited the graves of both my grandfather’s, shopped a lot, and ate a lot.
I’m so glad that Roxy is bonding so well with all our family in Hong Kong and that she has met her Great-grandmother. I was looking back at the pictures of Roxy with my Popo and our family at the reunion and I know in my heart that I will always cherish these. It’s hard having family living so far from you that you’ve gotta fly across the world to see them. I wish I could spend more time with my Popo.
I don’t know when I will come back to HK next. But I’m determined to keep coming back and to bring my kids back, if only to see family, eat, and shop, and connect. Something doesn’t have to be a part of your daily routine to be a part of you I think. I have the feeling that I’m going to delve into my connection to Hong Kong more in the future. If anything, the distance between Hong Kong and my life in Cali makes me appreciate my roots even more.
