I’ve eaten at Hook & Ladder twice and had a great experience both times. The outside patio is awesome, the food is good, and the customer service was attentive and friendly. I was reluctant to try this place for the longest time because I remembered that it used to be Hangar 17 and thought it was just typical bar food. Boy was I wrong!
The first time I went I had the Crab Hash with dungeness crab, with 2 sunny side up eggs on top, roasted corn & peppers, potato, onion, and chipotle hollandaise. It was phenomenal and I highly recommend getting this! Everything about this dish was right and the chipotle hollandise was so tasty. I polished the whole thing and found myself scooping up the last bits with my fork. I also tried a the Breakfast Pizza with fennel sausage, roasted potatoes, mushrooms, caramelized onion, and two sunny side up eggs. I’ve never had pizza for breakfast before (well served as a breakfast item at least =). This pizza was good and the eggs on top seemed to make it really breakfasty. I would say the pizza is a good item to share but I wouldn’t order it for your main dish.
The 2nd time I went to Hook & Ladder it was for dinner. I had the Seared Day Boat Scallop with meyer lemon risotto and arugula. I really liked this dish! The scallops were lightly seared just as scallops should be. The lemon risotto was light and flavorful. You could really taste the lemon. My husband had the Bacon Wrapped Pork Tenderloin
with gorgonzola gnocchi & braised bitter greens. I had a few bites of this. I liked the pork tenderloin. It was tender and meaty and the bacon was crisp. The gnocchi came in these pillowy little bites. The bitter greens weren’t bitter at all. I honestly don’t know what type of veggie they were but they were good.
All in all, I had a positive experience at Hook & Ladder. It seems less crowded than many other restaurants in midtown. The good food combined with the friendly customer service and trendy atmosphere make it worthwhile. I really recommend the Crab Hash if you go here for brunch!
