I’ve read article after article detailing Donald Trump’s ongoing verbal diarrhea about how he is going to remake American society, repair whatever damage has been caused by Obama, and obliterate illegal immigration. I’m all for some immigration reform, but I’m for the type where our government opens up legal pathways to citizenship to hardworking people who contribute to our economy. I’m not for immigration reform where presidential candidates use xenophobia to sow seeds of racism in our society all while waving the American flag. Trump is a member of the latter group, essentially blaming illegal immigration for our society’s woes. “When Mexico sends its people,” Trump said during his presidential announcement, “they’re not sending the best. They’re not sending you, they’re sending people that have lots of problems and they’re bringing those problems. They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime. They’re rapists and some, I assume, are good people, but I speak to border guards and they’re telling us what we’re getting.”
This statement is wrong on many levels. I will do my best to highlight them. First of all, generalizing all Mexican immigrants into the category of drug dealers, criminals, and rapists is factually inaccurate and wrong. It’s like saying all Chinese people are bad drivers or all black people are lazy. It’s NOT true and it’s a damaging stereotype. Second, Trump is blaming Mexican immigrants for these crimes, when these crimes are committed by all ethnicities across the board. There is no factual basis for the assumption that the majority of crimes in the United States are committed by Mexican immigrants. Finally, Trump’s statement implies that the Mexican government encourages its citizens or purposefully sends them to the United States. He implies that they are sending “those people” and “those problems” on purpose.
Trump is preying on fears of a conservative white American audience who greatly values job security and a solid American economy. The idea of a man like Donald Trump becoming the next President of the United States is and should be abhorrent to anyone who values ethnic diversity, racial equality, and equality, freedom, and justice for all. However, I don’t think we have anything to worry about. The makeup of American society is changing. As evidenced by the linked articles above, Chinese immigrants now comprise the largest group of new arrivals to the United States while Latinos are officially the biggest ethnic group in the State of California. The minority is now becoming the majority. Welcome to the new world order Mr. Trump. The very people you criticize and insult, including Chinese and Mexicans, will be the very people who make sure that you’re not our next president. See by generalizing Mexicans, etc, you inadvertently insult any person who identifies as Mexican, whether they are legal or not. There are many Chinese American citizens and Mexican American citizens who are eligible to vote in the 2016 presidential election who will see hell freeze over before you become our next president. For this reason, I want you to keep up your xenophobic rhetoric. It will make our next presidential election entertaining and it will be fun to watch you fall when you realize, the very people you have insulted have kept your fake toupee out of the White House.
