After being sheltered in place for such a long time, I’ve learned to appreciate any time out of the house. I love it when my girls get to be outside running around in the community, and I get to have some adult interactions! I was absolutely thrilled when the Neighbor Good Market announced its community market in Elk Grove’s District 56!
Atmosphere
Located in the courtyard between the Elk Grove Community Center and the Elk Grove Aquatics center, NeighborGood Market is held every Thursday night from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. At least a dozen vendors set up their tents/food trucks and fill them with goodies! Some vendors sell produce, some sell baked goods/food, some sell services, and some sell books or decorations. All the vendors are local to the Sacramento area, and everything sold is homemade or homegrown. There’s a DJ who blasts fun tunes and there are several open spaces to social distance. My family loves to sit in the middle of everything and enjoy our surroundings. Seriously, after a trainwreck of a year and social distancing, my family and I almost feel like normal when we go to NeighborGood Market.
The Food
Of course, my family had to try the kettle corn from Kettle Corn Masters. You truly can’t go wrong with this fun treat! The kernels were fresh and well-popped. The corn was covered in a salty-sweet syrup that melted in my mouth! This was a fantastic choice!
Our new go-to is the pork belly tacos from the Pop-up Truck tent! They are extremely tender and easy for all ages to eat. They are served on warm corn tortillas. The pork is juicy and well seasoned, which pairs perfectly with the hot sauce and crema placed over the top. The tacos are spicy, but the sweetness of the pickled onions balances the flavors perfectly. These are a hit among my family.
How can you pass up the smell of fresh donuts?! We couldn’t! These miniature donuts are pipping hot and perfectly bite-sized. They are coated in a fine sugar that adds flavor and sweetness to the dough. The sugar can come in different flavors, but we stuck with the original. The bucket easily feeds a family of four and left us extremely satisfied.
Man, these tacos were packed with flavor! This 4 pack of tacos was very traditional and came with lots of gorgeous cilantro and onions. The meat was very flavorful and extremely spicey! After one bite I found myself chugging my daughter’s blueberry lemonade from Cafe Elk Grove. They were loaded with sour cream (thank goodness) so this allowed for my tongue to calm down. Although this was too spicy for my kiddos, my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed each bite!
Overall
The NeighborGood Market is a fantastic event! The music is fun, the food is great, and the vendors are fantastic! My family can’t help but go every week. People wear masks and everyone simply eats on their own picnic blanket or sitting with their own family. This is a great way for us to stay connected with our community even during a pandemic, and I couldn’t be any happier! Give the NeighborGood Market a try!
