I’m a shabu shabu fan. My favorite shabu restaurant in town is now Shabu Pub located on Freeport Blvd. Why, you ask? It’s very tasty, and it satisfies my cravings for meat, soup, and noodles. It’s the perfect place to go when it’s cold outside.
Broths, Proteins, & Veggies
First of all, Shabu Pub really has a variety of good broths including House Special, Tonkatsu, Miso, Tom Yum, Kimchi, Szechuan, and Kombu. While It says 2 broths a person, the amount of broths you get actually depends on how many people you have. For example, we had 6 people and we got 2 pots with 4 broths total (2 in each pot).My family and I winded up picking 4 broths. We picked Miso, Tom Yum, House Special, & Tonkatsu. All were good. My favorite, and my husband Kenny’s favorite, was the Tom Yum broth. It’s a bit spicy and just adds a little kick. Probably, I’m guessing the Szechuan is also just as spicy. But I really kept going back to that Tom Yum broth.
Most noteworthy, for proteins they have Wagyu Beef, Prime Short Rib, A5 Wagyu (from Japan), Lamb, Premium Pork, Kurobuta Pork Belly, Seafood, Land & Sea, and Vegetable & Tofu Shabu. Especially relevant, you can get the proteins in a regular size or in a large size. I actually highly recommend getting a large size if you’re going for the Wagyu Beef or Prime Short Ribs.
I think if you have kids the Miso or the Tonkatsu broth should be good for them. Each patron is given a portion of ponzu and sesame (peanut like) sauce.
We winded up getting a large portion of Wagyu Beef and Prime Short Ribs, and a regular portion of the Seafood. Both were delicious. Because the broth is really tasty, I really just like cooking the meat in the Tom Yum broth and dousing it in the ponzu sauce. They have green onion, garlic, and daikon right at the table. Therefore, I suggest adding some of each to your ponzu sauce. The Seafood came with crab, salmon, fish balls, clams, and scallops. I did like the Seafood, but really wished there was more of it.
This is actually a good place for vegetarians if your group can pick a broth or two and agree to keep it to just vegetables and noodles. They do give a good amount of vegetables. We winded up ordering more udon and I’m betting you also wind up ordering more noodles. If you want you can also add on more meat in both regular and large sizes, mushrooms, vegetables, fish, shrimp, fish balls, rice, udon, or an egg.
All You Can Eat Versus Regular & Large Portions
The All You Can Eat option is $30.99. The meat is $16.99 for a regular portion and $20.99 for a large portion. Unless you have the eating capacity of Joey Chestnut, I suggest you go with large sizes of the proteins. For you to get All You Can Eat, all people sitting at the table have to get it. Unless you are ordering more extras than the difference in cost between the sum total of each persons all you can eat and the sum total of each person’s entree, the All You Can Eat Option just doesn’t make sense.
Customer Service
Lisa was our server. She was phenomenal. Every single time I needed something she just showed up. She noticed when my hubby finished his beer and asked him if he wanted another glass. She took it upon herself to consolidate our plates so we would have more room. I noticed that Lisa would show up to our table just to check in and constantly asked us if we needed anything. Seriously, I might try to request Lisa as a server the next time I go to Shabu Pub. It’s apparent that they train their staff well.
Overall
In conclusion, I really like Shabu Pub and would definitely go again. The food is excellent, the customer service is spot on, and it’s a fun atmosphere. I’m really happy that Shabu Pub is on Freeport and I look forward to going back soon with my family. JAX APPROVED!
