Those of you that know me and my family also know, we don’t mess around when it comes to food. My cousin is getting married at Solage Calistoga and her wedding will be catered by Solbar so we decided to check out Solbar to see if the food measures up to it’s 1 Michelin Star rating. Let me start off by saying, I absolutely believe that Solbar is worthy of it’s 1 Michelin star!
We started off our meal by ordering the chicken noodle soup with farfalline, pulled chicken, garnet yams, & hen of the woods mushrooms. This wasn’t just ordinary chicken noodle soup. The minute I tasted this soup, I automatically understood that it was a carefully crafted soup that had been simmering for hours. The pulled chicken and the hen of the woods mushrooms really created a subtle and earthy flavor to this soup. I don’t usually like yams and these yams were just the right texture with a slightly sweet flavor. The farfalline pasta was perfect. I devoured every drop of this soup and put my lips straight to the bowl to catch the last drops.
For the main course we ordered the lucky pig made of slow-roasted shoulder of homestead hampshire pork, which was served with black sesame crepes, pickled pineapple, Mongolian peanuts, and lettuce cups. The menu said that the lucky pig was for 2 people but honestly, we had 3 hungry people, and we still had leftover. I can easily advise that this dish is big enough for 3 people. The pork shoulder was this heavenly mass of meat that just fell apart when I poked it with my fork. I layered the sesame crepe inside a lettuce cup (to hold it together) and topped it with the pork shoulder, pickled pineapple, and Mongolian peanuts, and the accompanying sauce. After I had the first bite, I actually closed my eyes in ecstasy so I could focus on the exquisite taste. I took a look at my dining companions and they had looks of pure joy on their faces. I’m still drooling when I think about that lucky pig!
The food at Solbar rocked my world. The customer service was spot on. I left Solbar feeling full and happy and firmly resolved to come back soon. I definitely recommend making reservations to Solbar in advance. Don’t hesitate, try the chicken soup and the lucky pig!
