Fried Green Tomatoes with Red Pepper Marmalade & Ham
I’m going to be straight. The food was overall mediocre but not great. The entree prices were way too high for this type of place. I’m not coming back here!
We ordered the Fried Green Tomatoes with Red Pepper Marmalade & Ham, the Buttermilk Fried Chicken and the Beeler’s Duroc Pork Chop. We also added on sides of corn and Pepper Jack Mac ‘n Cheese. I liked the Fried Green Tomatoes themselves but didn’t like the marmalade. The ham itself was fine but nothing special. The Buttermilk Fried Chicken was decent, but I would have liked the fried chicken to have a little spice or a little more of a kick to it. The Beeler’s Duroc Pork Chop was excellent. I was not a fan of the Mac N’ Cheese at all. To be fair, my husband makes a really good mac n’cheese with 4 types of cheese and bacon so maybe it’s not a fair comparison.
The wait time for the food was ridiculous. The waiter gave us fairly reasonable service. But I know that we asked him 3 times if he could please check on our food and that it was 45 minutes after we placed our order that the food came out.
I have a problem with the prices. For the Fried Green Tomatoes, The Buttermilk Fried Chicken, the Beeler’s Duroc Pork Chop with corn on the side, the Pepper Jack Mac’n Cheese on the side, 2 beers, and a Peach Mint Julep, the meal cost $82. It was just me and my husband eating. I’m sorry, that Buttermilk Fried Chicken is just not worth $19 for what you get. The Beeler’s Duroc Pork Chop was great but again, just not worth $19. And this is NOT the type of restaurant where you expect to spend close to $100 (including tip). I believe we spent a total of $95 (including tip).This would have been a 3 star review if the prices were reasonable and the food wait time was reasonable.
If you want to go somewhere for good fried chicken try Hard Knox Cafe in San Francisco. You get 3 pieces of fried chicken, 2 sides, and corn muffins all for $11. Now that’s a good deal. $19 for Buttermilk Fried Chicken is a rip off and you get less food than Hard Knox.
If I wanted to go spend this kind of money I’d go to Mulvaney’s, a well respected restaurant in Midtown Sac. At least then I’d expect to spend more and get some great quality food. The Porch is ripping people off! Enough said!
**Everyone please note that the owner left me a note on Yelp and messaged me privately. First off, I won’t be bullied into changing my tune on a review. Second, Mulvaney’s is a better restaurant, with better quality food and is much more worth the price that you pay. I think anybody who has been to both Mulvaney’s and The Porch would agree with these statements. If the owner of The Porch thinks his food is better, or more worth the price, he is welcome to think so. Third, the owner accused me of “forgetting” to mention items. Nice try! I didn’t forget anything and this was a pathetic attempt to minimize the fact that The Porch has ridiculous prices. If you know me, feel free to hit me up if you want to see my receipt. Finally, I stand by my statement that The Porch is overpriced!
