Happy Gotcha Day & Happy 1st Day of School Sweetheart! Baby girl, we want you to know that we chose you and we loved you from the start. We can’t believe all that has happened in a year or how much you have grown up before our eyes. Adopting you was the best decision we have ever made. Every single day we wake up and thank God for you. We love you so much and are so proud and happy to call ourselves your parents.

Today was Roxy’s Gotcha Day and 1st day of school! I couldn’t believe it when Brookfield School called me and told me when her 1st day of school was. The 1st day of school was a bit delayed because it’s a new preschool and they were awaiting accreditation. I think it’s totally fitting that Roxy’s 1st day of school is on her Gotcha Day. A year ago, a red cheeked, scared and confused baby girl dressed in 5 layers of clothing was placed in our arms. She had so many layers of clothing that her arms were sticking out. But I knew at that moment that God had given us an incredible gift. That very 1st day, Roxy called me Mama. A year later, and my husband and I are still in awe that we get to be Roxy’s Mama and Baba. I think of how scared she was and now I can’t believe the feisty, energetic, bright little girl she has blossomed into. She’s grown 4 and 1/4 inches and went from a size 5 shoe to a size 8. She’s wearing mostly 3T and some 4T clothing. She can count to 15 in English, 10 in Mandarin, and has started naming colors and shapes. Roxy loves My Little Pony, Frozen, Hello Kitty and the color pink. She also loves music and dancing.
Adoption is a lot of back and forth. It’s emotional, stressful, and heart wrenching. I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat. Every single second of the sleepless nights, the endless praying and worrying, and all my tears were worth it. I got a beautiful baby girl that fits into our family like a glove. God knew we needed her.
I was actually a bit worried about how the 1st day of school would go but I needn’t have worried. Roxy was so excited to wake up and model her Hello Kitty backpack and kitty lunch bag. (Mama was a sleepy-eyed, crying mess but that’s besides the point.) We got to the beautiful new campus of Brookfield School and went to Roxy’s classroom. There, we met her teacher, Ms. Lopez and put Roxy’s lunch, blanket, and jacket in her cubby. Roxy was a little quiet and shy at first but soon began to play with the little kitchen. When I left her, the only tears were the ones running down my face as I drove home. I went home, caught up on my email, had lunch by myself and realized how quiet it was without my little girl.
When I picked up Roxy, she was playing with some of her classmates out in the yard. Her teacher told me that Roxy had had a wonderful 1st day. She loved painting, playing with play dough, and singing. She ate everything in the lunch that I packed. Roxy gave her teacher a hug as we were saying goodbye. On the way out, I got a chance to talk with the Preschool Director and the Brookfield School Director. I also met the mothers of some of Roxy’s classmates. We celebrated Roxy’s Gotcha Day and 1st day of school with mango snow bubble drinks and salt and pepper chicken wings from Boba Cafe.
How do you measure a year? In hugs? In food? In meetings? In boxes? In Facebook posts? In answered prayers? In love? This year has whipped by at lightening speed, my baby girl is now talking in English in full sentences, has grown 4 inches, and our family has gone through so many transitions, I can’t even count. I give credit to God for all the things which have happened in our lives this past year. Thank you God!
