Update: Responding to Racist Xenophobic Rhetoric

So I’ve been surprised recently. I’m not surprised by all the anti-Muslim, racist, bull**** I see in the media and on the news. I expect it from Donald Trump. I find his views to be discriminatory, repugnant, and frankly I think they violate the constitutional rights of citizens and the principles held true in the 1st Amendment, the Equal Protection Clause, and the 1964 Civil Rights Act. I have been very surprised though, at the posts I see on my Facebook feed, particularly with regards to people advocating the discrimination of Muslims. It’s not that I advocate Islam. I am a Christian. But there is a world of difference between advocating Islam and supporting the discrimination and persecution of Muslims.
Recently, I had to make a hard decision and it’s not one that I take lightly. But I have decided to boot the heck out of my life anybody who shares Trump’s hateful, discriminatory, racist, xenophobic points of view. I made it clear on Facebook that I won’t tolerate it. I even unfriended a few people and restricted a few others. I don’t mind thoughtful and respectful discussions. For example, in the abortion debate I am pro-life. But I am able to have fruitful and respectful discussions with my friends who support a women’s right to choose. But when it comes to the point where someone is tagging me on Facebook, when I have specifically told them I don’t want to go to their Facebook page to read any hateful rhetoric, just to bait me and to try to get a rise out of me, it simply becomes disrespect. When I make a Facebook post about how the discrimination of Muslims violates their constitutional rights, I don’t expect every Facebook post to be challenged, especially given the moral correctness of what I am advocating. I don’t expect everyone to share my points of view. But I was surprised yesterday when a line was crossed and it was crossed by one of the very women who actually helped to inspire our adoption journey. You know who you are and what you did to piss me off and I won’t be a part of your hate. And I say this openly and without regret to one woman.
You know exactly who you are. Thank you for supporting our adoption journey and inspiring our adoption. Unfortunately, because you cannot respect my different points of view as demonstrated by you tagging me in your anti-Muslim rants on Facebook, and because you advocate discrimination of Muslims, even native born Muslim Americans, I no longer wish to communicate, or be friends, or have any contact whatsoever with you in this life. I have lost respect for you and for the sake of myself and my family, I must discontinue whatever relationship we had, if we ever had a friendship in the first place.
To this person, you said that the majority of America shares your views. This is not true. It’s probably true that the majority of the GOP/Republican party shares your racist and xenophobic views. However, the Democratic party does not share these views. See back in 1960, I’m sure that if you polled American citizens, a good majority of them would have supported segregation. However, segregation isn’t morally correct and it violated the civil rights of non-Whites. So what I’m trying to say is that just because a certain point of view is held by any majority, it doesn’t mean that this view is morally correct. Anyway, it doesn’t matter what Trump or Cruz or any other racist and xenophobic politician advocates because even if they do become President of the United States, there are protections in place which prevent them from violating the laws of our land and from infringing on the rights of citizens and ordinary people. Discriminating against Muslims and advocating restrictions against them violates the First Amendment, the Equal Protection Clause, and the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Freedom of religion, freedom from tyranny and oppression, and equal rights for all are set rights guaranteed by our Constitution and the 1964 Civil Rights Act. If you wanted to change the Constitution it would require Congress to pass it (they won’t) but even if you were able to do that, any change to our Constitution or the 1964 Civil Rights Act would have to be ratified by 3/4 of all 50 states. So good luck trying to change that!
So again, to this woman, and you know who you are, I wish your family well but please respect my wishes and never contact me again in this life unless it’s to apologize for not respecting my points of view. I will pray for your health issues and especially for your 2 adopted Chinese daughters. I will not respond to any attempts to contact me. Any repeated attempts to contact me will be viewed as harassment which will be duly noted and dealt with according to the law.
See the picture above? As you all know, this is my daughter Roxy. She turns 4 in March. She doesn’t judge. She doesn’t hate. She isn’t racist or prejudiced. She loves indiscriminately. She cares. She will stay that way because this is how we raise her to be. If I have any doubts whatsoever about anyone in this life, here is my motivation to make some changes. No apologies.
