I really can’t believe that the summer is over. School started up again and Roxy was very excited to go off to her 1st day of Pre-K at Merryhill Preschool. After a lot of prayer and visiting other preschools, it had become clear to us at the end of last year that Roxy’s preschool wasn’t fulfilling all of her needs and didn’t cater to her needs as an adopted child. So we switched her to Merryhill Preschool this year, primarily because Roxy seemed to fit in well with their program, because they agreed to evaluate Roxy based on her abilities rather than her age on paper, and because they had an option to send Roxy to school 4 days a week from 9am to 12:30pm. Having a precocious child whose age on paper appears to be 6 months off from her actual birth date is tricky. We believe Roxy is 6 months older than her age on paper. Actually, we’re 100% sure of it. (A time date stamp on a pic taken two days after birth that says 1 SEPT 2011 wouldn’t be possible if Roxy wasn’t supposed to be born yet!) This means that, if we were to send Roxy to public elementary school, that we’d have to abide by the rule that kindergarteners must turn 5 by September 1 of the fall they enter Kindergarten. To circumvent this rule, which in Roxy’s case, is NOT in her best interest, we have decided to send Roxy to private school. What people don’t realize is that Roxy actually functions at a pretty high level so it’s not that we’re pushing her. We’re simply trying to allow her to stay at the grade level of her real age.
Roxy is anything but shy and she had no qualms or issues whatsoever about starting at a new preschool. She comes home from school chattering about her new friends and her teachers. I have no doubt that Roxy will do well at Merryhill and look forward to see what the rest of the school year will bring. We are planning on signing her up for Merryhill soccer this fall.
Roxy will be starting Kindergarten in the fall of 2016 (next fall) and I really can’t believe this. It seems like only yesterday we were toilet training and teaching Roxy English. Now, Roxy has grown 6 inches since we adopted her, chatters away in English, and is a remarkably self assured and feisty little girl. She still loves Frozen and My Little Ponies and she begs to play games on the iPad mini. Our favorite part of each day is simply spending time with Roxy after my husband gets home from work. She’s so loving and entertaining, that we talk about how much our lives were lacking before we adopted Roxy.
I hope you all have a smooth back to school transition! May God bless all of you and your families!
XOXO Jax
