Roxy Cheung is 2 and today is our 2 month anniversary of gotcha day (January 13, 2014)! I can’t believe Roxy is 2 and I can’t believe it’s been 2 whirlwind months since we officially became a family of 3. So you might ask what have we been up to lately? The answer? A pretty good routine. Play dates. Lots of people dropping by to meet Roxy. Everything is based around Roxy. Roxy wakes up around 10am and I give her a bath and make us both lunch. Then Roxy plays pretty much most of the day. Roxy refuses to nap. We’ve tried it. I’ve tried laying down with her. She refuses and usually gets up. If I put her in the playpen or crib, she just cries for an hour. So no nap for now. I’d LOVE to figure out a way to get her to nap though. Kenny comes home around 5 to 5:30 pm and we have dinner around 6:30 or 7pm. We put Roxy to bed by 10pm. She won’t go to bed unless at least one of us lays with her. So usually both of us will lay with her for 20 minutes until she falls asleep. Twice a month Roxy and I both go to my Mom’s Group. The Moms are reading the book When Women Say Yes To God by Lisa TerKeurst. Roxy and the other kids play while we do our study. Roxy has been having some play dates and all of them have gone well. Also, we have visitors pretty often to our home. We’re trying to introduce all the people we know and love to Roxy. We haven’t really gone out to restaurants much with Roxy, mostly because it’s just easier to eat at home.
Kenny and I decided to make Roxy’s 2nd birthday extra special because it was her 1st birthday with us. We know that in China birthdays aren’t really celebrated as much. Chinese people (from China) don’t usually do presents or cake. I think they usually do something like a special birthday dinner. We really wanted Roxy to commemorate this birthday so we planned a lot of things for our baby girl. A few days before her actual birthday, we gave Roxy her 1st present, a Honda Strider Bike. We also got her some Plasmacar scooters, and a Little Tykes Slide. We got the idea of getting her a slide because she really loves going down all the playground slides. Roxy loved all her presents and has spent days scooting around in our kitchen and going down the slide which is currently in our backyard. We also planned a huge party at our place in Elk Grove with a magician, face painting for the kids, and hired a taco cart and some awesome catered Asian food. Kenny made his specialty mac n cheese with bacon and I made my soy ginger chicken. We had some family and many friends and members of our church in attendance. I think everyone enjoyed the food (we pride ourselves on having good food at our parties). The kids had lots of fun getting their faces painted, running over the bridge, going down the slide, and trying out the PlasmaCars, and Roxy’s Honda Strider Bike. I remember checking the evite right before the party and I was shocked by how many people were coming. We were really touched that so many people came. Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate Roxy’s birthday with us! It mean so much to me and Kenny to celebrate our baby girl’s birthday and adoption with so many of our friends and family. As we thank God for Roxy, please know we also give thanks each day for providing us with such a supportive group around us. You guys are the best!
My parents were unable to attend Roxy’s party due to my Father’s health, but I’m thankful we were able to spend some quality family time with my parents and my sister Ali that weekend. My parents seem to love their new granddaughter and can’t seem to get her to say Gung Gung and Popo (Grandpa & Grandma in Chinese) enough. My sister Ali has embraced her new niece and seems to really understand Roxy’s adventurous spirit. (I’m convinced Roxy will be more athletic than I ever was). Roxy is definitely very energetic. We had a great time riding PlasmaCars (scooters) in my parent’s backyard and take Roxy for a ride on her Honda Strider Bike.
It’s hard to believe that Roxy is 2 and that we have been her parents for 2 months. She has come so far in such a short period of time. When we first got her she seemed a bit confused at first although she accepted us as her new parents pretty quickly. She wasn’t unhappy when we were in China but we are noticing that she seems to be smiling more in general and in pictures now that we have her back home, got her into a routine, and adjusted to our daily life. We get lots of comments about how Roxy seems to be adjusting well and how friendly and happy she is. Roxy’s vocabulary is expanding daily. The other day we realized just how quickly she picks up words from us when our cat Mochi was on the counter and she shouted, “Mochi, GET DOWN!” We had no idea she could even say get down. She now says: mama, baba, mommy, hi, bye bye, no, ok, cat, Mochi, Miso, Mango (our cats names), get down, gentle, banana, basketball, bathroom, pee, poop, diaper, cook, ABC and can count from 1 to 7. She is very affectionate and doles out hugs and kisses daily. She has had several play dates and made lots of new friends. Roxy tends to like toys that are musical or that make noise or can move. She loves going to the park and going down the slides and on the swing. One of my biggest joys is just taking Roxy to the park and watching her play. Roxy has been doing so many new things. Roxy is even potty training herself. They said in referral updates that she was potty trained but when we got to China we found out this wasn’t the case. But recently, Roxy started plopping herself down on the potty when she has to pee. She calls out “Mama Mama!” until I come. Then when she is done she will say “diaper?” So when she poops on the potty that will be another milestone. I think we’re going to keep her in pull-ups for awhile. Roxy seems to be really adjusting well to her new life and fits right into our tight knit circle of family and friends.
People have been saying Roxy is really lucky to have me and Kenny. But honestly, we feel like we are the lucky ones. We have been blessed with a beautiful little girl who is really the light of our lives. We love just watching her and taking care of her. Every little thing she does is wondrous to us. Roxy is growing and changing so fast. I know that I’m going to blink and suddenly she will be in school. That’s why I’ve been taking lots of pics and videos and recording everything on this blog. I want to preserve details how Roxy is when she is still small because it will be such a precious memory when she gets older. I’m thanking God for Roxy and for all the blessings in my life right now. Roxy was the amazing answer to many of our prayers over the course of a few years. God is amazing and my heart is at peace.
