China Adoption: Day 1 We Have Roxy! Gotcha Day!

We have Roxy! We received Roxy at approximately 10:00am on Monday January 13 in the name of the Lord. We arrived at the Civil Affairs building in Wuhan and immediately saw our daughter being held by her nanny and taken out of a van. She immediately locked eyes with me. She looked like she was wearing A LOT of clothing. We had to wait until they calmed the kids down and took them upstairs. About 5 minutes later we were allowed upstairs. The hand off wasn’t official. We wandered into the room and were introduced to the orphanage director. We met Roxy and immediately took her into the playroom (it was quieter) and held her. At first she seemed stunned by everything that was going on. She cried a little bit. But she let herself be comforted. We had our first prayer as a family and thanked God for bestowing us the gift of our daughter and pledged to raise her to to know to know Him. I carried her outside to our “adoption bus” and we went to the police station to take her passport picture.
When we got back to the hotel room we peeled off 5 layers of clothing (NOT JOKING!) and changed her into some comfy clothes. I was amused to see that the layer over her diaper including some Chinese split pants. (In Chinese culture, they dress the babies in split pants so they can just teach the kids to squat and go. I’ll be saving the clothes Roxy came in, both for sentimental reasons and because I want to prove that split pants exist!) We fed her some milk, banana, and shrimp chips but she wasn’t very hungry. She definitely seems to understand that we are her parents. I went to the bathroom to wash my hands and when I left the bedroom, she immediately screamed, “Mama, Mama!” I was in tears because I wasn’t expecting this on the first day. Her personality is starting to come out. She was talking to us in Mandarin and we feel bad because I only know a few phrases and sometimes all we can do is smile back. We got a few smiles and giggles out of her last night. We think she is doing really well and adjusting well considering that she was just taken from her foster parents yesterday, and handed to us. Kenny bought some food back yesterday afternoon and we spent the rest of the day and the evening just getting to know our daughter and spending time as a family.
Some of her likes: milk, shrimp chips, Kai Lan doll, watching cartoons, looking in the mirror, being cuddled, being held, the color pink.
The magnitude of what God has done and the privilege of being parents to this amazing little girl is just overwhelming. We love her so much already. I was holding her last night and crying tears of joy. I was trying to cry quietly so as not to alarm her, but there is not a single doubt in our mind, that God answered our prayers. Kenny has settled into the role of Baba very well and enjoys feeding her and cuddling with her. If any of you have ever thought about adopting or lifting up a family pursuing adoption or championing the cause of orphaned children, we can say honestly say that adopting Roxy is seriously the best decision we’ve ever made (along with following God of course).
We are so happy to share the story of adopting our daughter Roxy with all of you! We can’t wait to share more updates with all of you and look forward to coming home and introducing you all to Roxy. Please pray for Roxy’s adjustment, that we can continue to bond well with her, and for her health since she is a bit sick.
We praise God for our beautiful new daughter and we hope that Roxy’s adoption will glorify His name. We have so much gratitude for all the love, prayers, and support we have received. Thank you so much for supporting our adoption.

Loved reading this, Jackie! Roy and I both always say that choosing to adopt our daughters was the best decision we have ever made in our lives. Without our daughters, we would feel hollow, as if the insides of us were void of any substance. I know you both feel the same thing. I wish more people could understand as we do how precious and unique each child is. It appears that your friends understand this as well. You have wonderful support from those around you. They are as much family as anything. God is blessing you on a daily basis times a thousand fold!
