Entourage characters from L to R: Ari, Eric, Vince, Turtle, Johnny Drama
So I’ve been watching the show Entourage for about a year now. I’ll admit it. I’m hooked. I’m honestly still trying to figure out why my husband and I like the show so much. It’s basically about a group of guy friends who lead crazy lives. Entourage is set in Los Angeles, the city to be in if you’re in the movie or entertainment industy. Ari owns an agency that represents celebrities. He’s pompous, not politically correct, domineering, and about what you’d expect from a power exec. Eric, Vince, Turtle, and Johnny Drama have been friends since childhood. Eric is a bit conservative and generally doesn’t like to take risks. He has issues showing the girl he loves that he cares. Eric manages Vince’s acting career. Vince a the celebrity movie star whose career rises and falls throughout the show. Vince is a fun guy, a little immature, and a bit of a playboy, often having shallow one night stands. Turtle is a very likable guy. He likes collecting expensive shoes, has enterprising ideas, and seems to always be sniffing at a girl who is too hot for him. He is a refreshingly honest guy and can’t seem to lie to save his life. Finally, Johnny Drama is Vince’s older brother. He is an emotional guy who has no clue that he’s not that good looking. He is also an actor but tends to get looked over and lives in the shadow of his baby brother. Eric, Vince, and Drama are represented by Ari’s agency. Turtle has his own business ventures (some successful, some not) but hangs with the guys often. Eric, Vince, and Turtle are around age 30. Drama is probably mid to late thirties. Ari is easily in his mid 40s.
I think the universal appeal for this show comes from the fact that these guys have solid friendships and are surrounded by celebrities and get to do things that the rest of us can only dream about (such as act in movies or run to the Cannes Film Festival at the drop of a hat). Actual celebrities such as Jessica Alba, Mike Tyson, Jessica Simpson, and Bob Saget make appearances on the show as themselves. The result weaves this Entourage into a highly entertaining, if inorthodox show. New shows come out on Sunday nights at 10pm. I would suggest giving Entourage a shot. It’s one of the few shows that my husband and I both genuinely like.
