I was talking to a young woman who is currently in college recently. She mentioned that her world is changing and people around her are changing. I looked into her eyes and told her that it’s okay if things are changing. God sends everyone into your life for a reason. Sometimes when a certain need has been fulfilled the relationship ends or changes. I told her about my experiences while in college at UC San Diego, in grad school, and when I got married. I’ve kept a few people in my life since I was 18. But things definitely shift around every few years. Every once in awhile there is a shift and someone who may have once been a large part of my life, then either moves out of my life or takes on a more distant role. Every once in awhile I prepare to do something I have never done before. This time, I’m preparing to adopt a child and become a parent.
Today, my husband Kenny and I were painting our daughter’s room. Tomorrow, the crib that turns into a toddler and full sized bed, and the double dresser we ordered will be delivered. Next week I will be joining a Mom’s group and fellowship. In a few weeks some of our friends are throwing us a co-ed shower which me and Kenny are both looking forward to. As these things are going on and as we prepare to go to China to adopt our daughter, we know in our hearts that we are opening up our hearts and getting into the groove of being a Mom and Dad.
I’m making positive choices for myself and for my family. This includes filtering people in our lives and surrounding ourselves with those who lift us up and support our adoption. That’s what our daughter deserves to be brought into. We are also looking at many seasoned things with fresh eyes. Changes are a natural part of life. They help you to grow and evolve as a human being. I’m fine with riding the wave of change. I accept it and rise to the challenge.
