I’ve been meaning to review Sweet Dozen for awhile. Sweet Dozen is a wonderful family owned bakery in Sacramento and hands down, they have the best doissants (their version of the cronut), donuts, and baked goods that it’s ever been my privilege to taste. This is NOT a chain.
Okay, so I’ve had their donuts and baked goods a few times and I can tell you off the bat what my favorites are. I LOVE their maple bacon doissant, sugar doissant, glazed doissant, and custard doissant (really any of their doissants are phenomenal), their doissant holes, their glazed and maple bacon donuts, their glazed donut holes, and the maple bacon melt. I have a sweet tooth and grew up loving glazed donuts. So I always start assessing a bakery by the quality of their glazed donut. Sweet Dozen’s glazed donut is so good, it makes you want to pound a few of them without stopping. The glaze is perfect. If you aren’t that into sweet stuff, try their croissants. I’ve had a plain croissant from here before and a ham and cheese croissant and both were great. I think a ham and cheese croissant from Sweet Dozen would make a good quick snack if you’re on the go.
I had heard about their melts before and was dying to try it. A melt is a warm fresh donut with ice cream inside. When we were handed the maple bacon melt with vanilla ice cream inside, I snagged my first bite and started grinning like a Cheshire cat. It was so freaking good! The crisp, meaty bacon and the sweet maple paired just perfectly with Gunther’s vanilla ice cream. Whoever came up with this is a genius. I’m drooling just thinking about the maple bacon melt I had.
“Quite frankly this is one of the best things I’ve ever tasted! Like ever!”

I would like to go back soon and try the 50-50. So for those of you familiar with Gunther’s 50-50 (fruit freeze with a generous portion of ice cream in the middle), Sweet Dozen’s 50-50 is a warm freshly made donut with Gunther’s mango fruit freeze and vanilla ice cream inside. Yum!
If you haven’t checked out Sweet Dozen yet, you’re really missing out. The tasty baked goods made with love and the friendly customer service will make you want to go back. I know Sweet Dozen might be a bit far away if you aren’t around the Carmichael area, but trust me, it’s worth the drive. Don’t forget to get some Stumptown coffee as well. I have no reservations whatsoever about recommending Sweet Dozen.
Hint: go early or call if you want to make sure they have doissants. They sell out quickly.
