This review has been a long time coming. Ravenous has had a few owners through the years and I have been meaning to review it under the latest owner Wade Sawaya. My husband Kenny and I really love Ravenous, a small, upscale, intimate restaurant in the Greenhaven area of Sacramento, which uses locally sourced fresh ingredients. To give it to you straight, the food is phenomenal, the wine selection is awesome, and the customer service is spot on. Ravenous knocks it out of the park.
Kenny and I have favorites that we always order and these are my personal recommendations for dining at Ravenous. They have a Spinach & Grilled Pear Salad with strawberries, bleu cheese, avocado, cherry tomatoes, red onion, in a honey-ginger vinaigrette that is a delightful, light way to begin your meal. It’s so fruity and tastes very fresh. We love love love their Smoked Paprika Mussels with garlic, smoked paprika, capers, cream, and sherry. I don’t always like mussels. The majority of the time, I prefer clams and oysters. But there is something about these smoked mussels that just make you want more. Roxy had her first mussels here and she really can’t get enough of these mussels. (What can I say, I’m raising a foodie.=) If mussels are on the menu, GET THEM! Don’t forget to order more bread so you can sop up the mussel sauce with it!
For my main course, I usually order the Risotto with Grilled Tiger Shrimp, mushrooms, English peas, carrots, leeks, shallots, cherry tomatoes, prosciutto, saffron, & white wine reduction. It’s the perfect risotto! It’s slightly creamy, as risotto should be, and spreads nicely. The grilled tiger shrimps are huge! As my husband points out, I’m not even usually a shrimp person. I’ll usually eat shrimp my husband is having it or if we’re eating something like salt and pepper shrimp at a Chinese restaurant. But you will almost never see me order it myself. Well, I like the shrimp at Ravenous. There is something about having it with the risotto there and the whole dish just works. I always clean my plate. I never take any home. My husband loves lamb. I don’t like lamb and won’t touch it. But my husband swears the lamb at Ravenous is among the best he has tasted. The Pan Seared Lamb T-Bones come with creamy thyme purple mashed potatoes, baby spinach, asparagus, yellow squash, in a blueberry-port wine reduction. Kenny also likes the ribeye and the filet mignon at Ravenous. He gets steak at Ravenous every once in awhile. I’ve had it before and both are excellent. You can’t finish it all but both the ribeye and filet mignon taste great the next day.
In short, Ravenous is an awesome neighborhood restaurant. It’s a great place for a date or for an intimate dinner with a loved one and I have no reservations whatsoever about recommending it. The food is simply superb and Wade and April make the restaurant cozy and treat their customers like family. Whenever we arrive and leave Ravenous now, I really feel valued. You can’t always say that when you eat at a nice restaurant. I highly recommend making a reservation because the place is small and man they fill up quickly! I think reservations are required on the weekends. Say hi to Wade and April tell them Jax & Kenny sent you. They’ll remember us, we’re the Asian couple who literally set the menu on fire! (True story, Kenny was holding the paper menu and accidentally lit it in the candle, and it was epic!) Happy eating my friends!
