Well it’s Summer! The weather has been confusing to me for a couple of days. First it was hot. We had our first day over 100 degrees. But then it rained. May was actually a bit cool for Sacramento. So I’ve been looking forward to the hot days of Summer. Mainly, I’ve been looking forward to Roxy being out of school and just enjoying our pool with family and friends. Roxy really loves the water so except for one day when it rained, we basically have hit the pool and jacuzzi every day. We already have a tradition at our house. We like grilling ribeye and then after dinner going for a swim in the pool and hopping in the jacuzzi. Roxy has learned to float and we are hoping to teach her to swim this summer.
We have a lot of things planned this Summer. We’re taking a few trips and have a few weddings (not as many as the year we went to 13 weddings and 2 on the same day in different parts of LA!). I’m really looking forward to the 4th of July. We’re planning on having a bbq with family and a few close friends and since we have a pool and a jacuzzi now, it will be great to hang out on the 4th despite the heat. Since bbq season is in full swing we’ll be throwing down our usual ribeye, grilled oysters, grilled salmon, Kenny’s famous mac n cheese, my pico de gallo and guacomole, and tons of other goodies. At some point during the summer, we will try to have some sort of huge housewarming party. Our Christmas parties back in the day were epic. So this years housewarming and Christmas parties will be back in full swing, with an amazing food spread and much more space on account of the new house.
We’re pretty settled into the new house. We still have a lot to do because we will eventually do a mini kitchen remodel, a master bathroom remodel, and put some storage into the garage. This will not happen for a while though because we are still organizing and we don’t want to do everything at once.
I’ve been busy prepping for my cousin’s wedding. My Canadian cousin Jessica who is from Toronto and living in Tokyo is getting married in Calistoga near Napa and we’re kind of the local hosts. It’s really quite a wedding even though it’s small. Jess has always been like a little sister to me and I’m happy for her. I just need to make sure we get her and her fiance through the big day safely.
We made an important decision this week and it involves Roxy. Roxy has been at a very good school that is academically excellent. The problem is that it’s not addressing all of her needs. There is a discrepancy in her age on paper and her actual age. Long story. We have pretty credible evidence that Roxy’s age is 6 months off and that Roxy is 6 months older than they told us. Since Roxy is still catching up with language and yet still absorbing everything like a sponge, it’s hard to gauge where she is at academically. You have to remember that last year there was a time when she was just speaking Mandarin. Many schools are also very strict with the age cut offs. We are actually in the process of readopting Roxy in the state of California just to generate a valid birth certificate because what they gave us for her China birth certificate isn’t going to work here. So after a lot of going back and forth, some assessments at other schools, and a lot of prayer, we have decided to withdraw Roxy from her current school at the end of her school year and enroll her at another preschool closer to our home. In assessments at 2 preschools, Roxy was found to be at the level of Transitional Kindergarten. Roxy’s really progressing at a rapid rate. Honestly, she’s way smarter than I think I ever was. I’m confident we are making the right decision with Roxy’s schooling and relieved that we have a plan in place for Roxy’s education for the next 2 years. Roxy will actually be at the class level of her real age, not her age on paper. I just pray that Roxy has a good summer and does well in her new preschool in the fall.
I know the summer is going to go flying by. My time is precious. I’ve decided not to waste it. I’m now prioritizing my time by putting my family first, as I should. I’ve also decided to spend time with people who also value me and my family and view us as a priority, rather than an option. It feels liberating and empowering. Nothing and no one will stop me from being there for my family and for our good friends. I will stand by, defend, and protect them to the ground. This has happened more than once quite recently. I saw something occurring, and rather than just watch it happen, I took the bull by the horns and decided to see if tangible change in the form of human actions could be attained. And those who know me also know I have no qualms about voicing my truth, especially if I see anybody being negatively affected.
Happy Summer to all of you! May you all have a blessed week. I ask for prayer for my cousin Jessica’s upcoming wedding.
XOXO Jax
