So Kenny and I went recently to go check out Cask & Barrel’s new Sunday Brunch. Having gone to dinner at Enotria (the restaurant at the same location before it closed), I wasn’t really sure what to expect. But when I heard about the Southern themed Sunday brunch sourcing local farm to fork ingredients, I made it a priority to book a reservation.
I’m not going to lie. We over ordered. Why? Because I’m a pregnant woman who felt like trying a bunch of things on the menu and my kind-hearted husband didn’t object. Right off the bat, I’m going to tell you that my favorite items were the Foie Gras French Toast, the Lamb Shoulder Carnitas, the Pork Belly & Buttermilk Biscuits. I love foie gras. I was very sad when it wasn’t legal. So when you pair foie gras with lightly grilled French toast, it’s really just a heavenly combination. The rich flavor of the foie gras pairs perfectly with the slight crispiness and sweetness of the French toast. I’m not even usually a lamb person. In fact I will admit I was skeptical about this dish. My husband loves lamb. But I usually don’t like the taste. But even I have to admit that the Lamb Carnitas at Cask & Barrel is really tasty and I have no qualms about recommending it. I also liked that you could tell that the corn tortillas were freshly made and so was the guacamole and the salsa. The Pork Belly & Buttermilk Biscuits had all the meaty taste you would expect from a good pork belly dish. The biscuits crumbled a bit which made them a bit hard to hold, but it was still delicious.
I also liked the Hickory Smoked Fried Chicken. It was served with really good bourbon and buttermilk sauces. I’m going to be honest and say that the Potato Pancakes & Smoked Sturgeon wasn’t my favorite dish. It tasted fine. Let me say, I didn’t dislike the taste. But it was missing some texture. Like I wanted to crunch on something. Also, the pickled quail egg on top didn’t really go with it. I would enjoy the dish more if some sort of crunchy texture was added and maybe it was topped with some sort of egg that wasn’t pickled. The Mac & Cheese had a Velveeta like texture. It was also fine but there wasn’t anything extraordinary about it that would make me want to eat it again and again. But since my husband Kenny makes a really good Mac & Cheese with Bacon or Pork Belly and uses high quality cheeses, my standards for Mac & Cheese are a bit high. So please take this with a grain of salt.
The service at Cask & Barrel was top notch. I was impressed at the way the Chef Gabriel (owner & chef) walked out of the kitchen a few times to meet and shake the hands of his customers and thank them for coming in. You don’t see a lot of chefs doing that and seeing how humble he was, it really just makes me want to keep patronizing this restaurant. I really want to go back to Cask & Barrel for the Foie Gras French Toast and the Lamb Shoulder Carnitas for sure. I also really want to try the Smoked Pork Shoulder Hash. I also hear that they serve dinner so I’d be interested to see what their dinner menu is like. You really can’t go wrong with the good food or the good customer service at Cask & Barrel. I highly recommend you check out their Sunday Brunch.
