I was excited to hear about Hokee Poke opening up in Elk Grove. Being an Elk Grove resident, it’s always nice to see new restaurants come to my neighborhood. It’s even better when these restaurants utilize breaking food trends and fresh ingredients.
Being 5 months pregnant, I had to negotiate a bit with my loving husband Kenny because before making the pilgrimage to Hokee Poke’s soft opening. Since I shouldn’t really be having raw fish, I had to promise I would only have a few bites and focus on the tofu, shrimp, rice, edamame and non-raw stuff.
I went with my family and and a few close friends to Hokee Poke’s soft opening and boy did we pig out. Hokee Poke has regular bowls and large bowls of poke. The regular bowls have 3 scoops of protein while the large bowls have 5 scoops of protein. For the proteins you can choose from ahi tuna, spicy tuna, salmon, yellowtail, octopus, shrimp, lobster, and tofu. They don’t mind if you mix and match. You get it on a base of white rice, brown rice, salad, or wonton chips. Then you just tell them what you want to add on from cucumber, wakame seaweed, edamame, green onion, sweet onion, masago, crab salad, macadamia nuts, ginger, avocado ($1 extra), wasabi furikake, and sesame seeds. We got a bunch of bowls and sauces, including ahi tuna with shoyu, spicy tuna with creamy miso, salmon with shoyu, yellowtail with spicy ono, tofu with shoyu, and shrimp with shoyu. All of our bowls were on a base of white rice. We got the spicy tuna, ahi tuna, and salmon bowls in the large size. We pretty much added every add-on we could except for the crab salad and masago.
It was so heavenly for me to have a few bites of raw fish. I know I’m not supposed to have it (save the lectures please-we checked on the baby and she’s fine) but it was a nice break from the foods I’ve been eating. My favorites by far were the ahi tuna and the spicy tuna. I also really liked the yellowtail. I thought the shrimp was fine but probably wouldn’t order it again considering the fish is so much better. I am a person who likes tofu so I will say the tofu option is perfect for any person who wants a vegetarian or healthy meal. My favorite sauces were the shoyu and the spicy ono sauce for sure.
We’ve been to Hokee Poke and total of two times now. The second time I went I had a regular bowl with a scoop of ahi tuna and 2 scoops of tofu with the spicy ono sauce on a bed of white rice and I added in every single add-on except masago. My husband had a large bowl with a scoop each of ahi tuna, spicy tuna, yellowtail, salmon, and lobster with smoky sesame sauce. Both bowls were delicious! I also had a few bites of the lobster since it was cooked and it was yummy.
I can say that the food and customer service at Hokee Poke are great. The servers are well trained and everyone is super friendly. The downfalls are that there really isn’t a lot of seating and the lines are long but honestly it’s really not bad at all. If you don’t feel like waiting for a table, just get your poke bowls to go. If you don’t know what to get, my recommendation would be to get the the regular bowl with 2 scoops of ahi tuna and maybe 1 scoop of spicy tuna and either the shoyu or spicy ono sauce on a base of white rice. Then just go through the add-ons and pick out what you like. Be sure to also check out the Gunther’s macaroon ice cream sandwiches!
