Kennedy High School Class of 97 at our 20 Year High School Reunion
I went to my Kennedy Class of 97 20 Year High School Reunion recently and I had a blast. I had reservations about going but at the urging of my husband and a few friends, I decided to go to the reunion at Momo Lounge. I’m so glad I did.
My High School Experience
I should explain that I was a very different person in high school. As a high school student I was serious, studious, and somewhat shy around people. I was socially awkward, to say the least. This might actually surprise many people who know me to be outgoing and extroverted now. During high school my parents kept me focused on school and my sole mission in high school was to get into a good college. My conservative Chinese parents rarely allowed me out to dances and social gatherings and I didn’t have much freedom.
I transferred to Kennedy High School my junior year after having spent the first two years of high school at parochial school. Because of this, I didn’t have a lot of good friends and I also was the victim of bullying. It took me years to get over the vicious bullying. So you can imagine why I had mixed feelings and was apprehensive about going.
The Actual Kennedy High School Reunion
My friends and my husband urged me to rise above whatever happened in the past and at Kennedy High School and just focus on creating new positive memories. So I decided to go. I figured that if anything wasn’t going as planned I could just bounce and meet our friends at a bar.
My hubby Kenny went along with me. I think it was interesting for him to meet people I went to high school with. Kenny grew up in Newport News, Virginia and had a very different high school experience. Since he was one of a few Asians in his high school, he suddenly understood why when we were first dating, everyone asked him, “Did you go to Kennedy?” Kennedy High School has a high Asian population.
There were less than 100 people in attendance. I got a chance to chat with our former Class President, listen to interesting stories about living and working in other states, and see dozens of pics of my classmate’s kids. My girls are now 5 and 18 months. So I was startled to realize that some of my classmates started their families earlier and even had kids in high school. Everyone seemed very tall to me. Haha, I felt so small! But then again, I’ve always been petite and haven’t grown any since high school.
Fortunately, I did get a chance to connect with a few people I had been friends with in high school and hadn’t seen since then. I also made some new friends. Some of the Class of 97 went to Junglebird after the reunion for drinks. I actually made plans to hang out with some people in the future, exchanged some cell phone numbers and business cards. I later connected with others on Facebook.
A Positive Experience
All I know is, I had a good time at the Kennedy High School Class of 97 20 Year Reunion. It was an event I had been nervous about going to. I am able to retain good memories gleaned from this event and connect to people from my past. At the end of the day, maybe this isn’t really about my high school reunion. It’s about the fact that I was able to take something, that up until this point, had been a point of pain for me, and turn it into something positive. So thank you, Kennedy High School Class of 97 and especially everyone who went to the reunion! I enjoyed connecting with you all and wish you guys all the best.
