Update: California State Fair 2019

Last week, our cousin Lawrence came to visit, and we had a great time taking him to the California State Fair. My close friend Jean and her son also joined us. Thankfully, it wasn’t very hot and we had a great time noshing on food, hanging out with the kids, and enjoying the rides.
Did you notice I said our cousin came to visit and not my cousin? Lawrence is my 1st cousin and Kenny’s 4th cousin, and no, Kenny and I aren’t related. My Dad and Lawrence’s Mom are brother and sister, while Kenny’s Dad and Lawrence’s Dad are 3rd cousins.
As a Canadian, Lawrence had actually never been to an American fair, so I figured he would enjoy all that the California State Fair has to offer. Where better to take our Canadian cousin than an American state fair?

The Food
One of my favorite parts of the California State Fair is of course the food. Among my favorite items are giant smoked turkey legs, grilled corn, lobster fries, and Dole whip. We know the fair very well so Kenny and I have a specific booth we get our turkey legs from. We go to this place way in back which is kind of across from the Icee both. I like saving the turkey leg bones to make soup or turkey congee (jook).

Kenny found this place that sold lobster fries. Of course, we had to get some. They were delicious with little bits of lobster on top of some crispy fries.

Our our family and Jean and her son all loved the grilled corn. They serve this really interesting grilled corn covered in spicy Cheetos! I love spicy Cheetos (anything spicy really). I did like the Cheetos corn on the cob. My personal favorite was just simple grilled corn, coated with butter and lemon juice, and sprinkled with dots of Tapatio, cayenne pepper, garlic salt, and lemon pepper seasoning.

I’m a fiend for Dole whip. I haven’t been to Disneyland in a long time so I usually get it sporadically. There was a food vendor selling Dole whip at the state fair and I was happy to indulge. It’s so refreshing!

Exhibits
I’m going to be honest and say that we didn’t visit very many exhibits or spend long in the ABC buildings (inventions & vendors) because my kids were impatient. They did, however, have fun posing for pics in the building with all the different county displays. We went to the Arts buildings but were a little disappointed this year. The room that usually has Fur & Feathers had some cute bunnies but didn’t have the baby chicks being hatched. I inquired and I guess there is some bird or poultry flu going on right now. Also, there was this gaming exhibit that I probably would have enjoyed if I was into gaming.
Outside, there was an area with a garden and a lot of fruits and veggies growing. Kids could learn more about the fresh produce we grow in California. They were also giving away some free trees and plants.

The Rides
I personally didn’t go on any rides whatsoever because my back was killing me. However, my daughter Roxy and my friend Jean’s son certainly enjoyed a lot. Roxy loves the swings with the long chains. There was this one set of swings that were super high, and I mean even higher than usual. It was at least 100 feet into the air, probably more. Roxy is also obsessed with the gravitron. It’s this ride that basically spins until you’re dizzy and some people look like they are about to throw up when they get off the ride.
If you have kids and at least 2 hours to kill, it’s probably worth it to get them the wristbands so they can go on an unlimited amount of rides.

Overall
Overall, the California State Fair was good this year. I thoroughly enjoyed the food, the experience, and the rides. The arts building exhibits this year were lacking a bit (sorry, just being honest) but that won’t keep me from saying I had a good time. If you get a chance, I highly recommend you check out the California State Fair at Cal Expo this year. Don’t forget to grab a smoked turkey leg and some grilled corn!
